Mark Ivan Cole grew up in the Ecuadorian Andes and has lived in three of the four quadrants of the planet, including Taiwan and the U.S. He and his wife, Ping, have hiked on trails around the world, from South Africa to Spain and from Bali to Xinjiang, China, not to mention miles and miles logged on foot in North America. Mark started drawing as soon as he could hold a crayon, and has worked in graphite, pen & ink and colored pencil for most of his adult life, but he didn't discover the magic of pastel until Ping gave him a set when he was almost 40 years old. He loved the mark-making and the immediacy of laying pigment directly on the surface. He says it feels like "painting with jazz." Mark is a signature member of the Pastel Society of America, has been juried into shows and won awards with his pastel paintings of natural subjects. He is also a composer and producer of original music, as well as a published novelist, essayist and poet. These various works can be found via his website: https://markivancole.wordpress.com.
